Friday’s Five Minute Interview: Myfanwy Collins
1. Who are you?
To be honest, I’m not entirely sure. I am a Canadian who has live most of her life in the United States. So I figure this makes me North American. I am a daughter and a sister and a wife and an Aunt I am hopeful to one day be a mother. I am also the best friend I can be to many loving people. And I am a person who writes and reads.
2. What do you write?
I write literary fiction mostly. I write short fiction, essays, novels. I have also written screenplays and some preposterously bad poetry. I write for a living—articles, advertorial, copy.
3. Why do you write what you write?
I am compelled to do it. Part of what I explore is socio-political—sexual politics, poverty, violence, war, rage, love. I am compelled to write about the class struggles in the North America. I do not believe the US is classless—I think it is all about it. All you need to do is look at who has the fattest wallets to know that. All you have to do is look at who are the soldiers to know that.
4. Why should we read what you write?
Because I want you to and I’m stubborn and I will not stop until you do.
5. Is the world a better place because of what you write?
I’m not sure it is possible for the world to be a better place. I think the world is a beautiful and an ugly place. I think the world is all of us and every breath and thought. As intricate and delicate as a snowflake. And as fleeting.
