Hanging with basil

Decided to snip the tops of my not-so-good-looking basil plant only to be freaked out by appearance of praying mantis, below. Did I snip any part of him/her while snipping basil? Nope. All parts are intact. See:

I was suddenly happier. I felt happy to know that Mr or Ms Mantis calls my basil plant home.

I remember now that the praying mantis was always welcome in our home back in Sydney. Unlike spiders and cockroaches which caused fear and loathing, the presence of the mantis was calming and pleasant. My mum always said it was good luck to have one visit. The mantis a good omen? I wonder why. I wonder if that has anything to do with the name mantis from the Greek for fortune teller or prophet.

Ms Mantis appears to have a lot of personality.

I think you should call the mantis Sybil, not only because it means oracle, but also because Sybil Fawlty ended up with Basil.
