Meme: The books of my life
The lovely Jai Clare has tagged me, so here goes:
One book that changed your life.
Obviously, there is no one book that changed my life. How can that be? My life is in constant change and many books have contributed to this. Overall though I can say that Thomas Hardy’s novels have been major catalysts. Especially, Jude the Obscure and Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Intrigued by portayal of the human being against the forces of the universe and society. Sue is a brilliant character, albeit a terrible disappointment at the end. Tess is a stoic all the way. But I love Hardy’s pessimism. The problem of fate.
One book that you’ve read more than once.
I’ve read Sartre’s Nausea many times.
One book you’d want on a desert island.
Wittgenstein’s Tractatus.
One book that made you laugh.
Can’t remember.
One book that made you cry.
Siri Hustvedt’s What I Loved - the opening of the second half of the book. Well, that was more of a loud gasp actually. I think it was Shriver’s Kevin that made me cry. Right towards the end when I realised why the father had been so silent throughout the book.
One book that you wish had been written.
In my twenties - Hustvedt’s The Blindfold. Now, Coetzee’s Disgrace.
One book that you wish had never been written.
The Bible.
One book you’re currently reading.
Nothing at the moment.
One book you’ve been meaning to read.
The Alexandria Quartet, because Jai keeps going on about it. And Murdoch’s The Sea, The Sea.
Not sure who I can tag with this. I think everyone I know has done it.
