Wednesday’s Five Minute Interview: Lydia Theys
1. Who are you?
I’m that person who always wants to keep the discussion going another minute. The one who wants to explore the topic just a little further. The one you went to high school with who emails you out of the blue. As my little bio says, I’m an astronomer by training, a contract writer by necessity and a creative writer by night.
2. What do you write?
All sorts of stuff. Shorts, flashes, novels, humor, CNF—whatever the voices tell me to do. I even dabble in horror and mystery. A lot of my work lately seems to be about loss and about time moving on. Not that I worry about such things. I’ve started ten times as many pieces as I’ve ever finished.
3. Why do you write what you write?
There’s no reason I’m conscious of except that urge we all have to share our thoughts and even teeny little insights. And to offer up our ideas and points of view as a way of asking others, “Do you see it this way?” “Do you understand this emotion?” “Did I surprise you or make you feel a flash of recognition?”
4. Why should we read what you write?
If you think communicating with strangers through the written word is an exciting opportunity and have a sense of curiosity about what’s in the mind of this one woman in this one place at this one time, you should read what I write. If you have no sense of humor or of kindness, you probably shouldn’t.
5. Is the world a better place because of what you write?
No. But I like to think it’s at least no worse. I do believe words can help or harm, but I haven’t the audience to make that kind of difference. Maybe that’s a good thing. It must be an awful burden to know your word will be read by millions. Although I wouldn’t squawk at the chance to find out.
